Karen founded 501creative in 1995 after spending a year volunteering full-time for Habitat for Humanity in Georgia and North Carolina and five years working for the corporate design world in Chicago. Karen graduated magna cum laude from the University of Michigan with a degree in graphic design...although she spent most of her Ann Arbor days working at The Michigan Daily.
Karen is passionate about social justice and summer camp and serves on the board of Camp for All Kids and the board of trustees for Crossroads College Prep. She lives in the CWE and spends her spare time with husband Marc Hirshman and daughters Abby and Emily. Karen likes campfires, bootcamp and swimming before dawn, biking trips with coffee stops, home-grown tomatoes and basil, Miss Hulling's split layer cake and candy (especially Red Hots, Hot Tamales, licorice, banana taffy and chocolate-covered sea salt caramels). Those of you who know about Karen & Marc's experiences with altitude sickness will be glad to know that they seem to stay healthy at or below sea level. A recent adventure was scuba diving in cenotes in the Yucutan Peninsula. Don't ask Karen about the cave part.
